The four approaches to team building

Team building activities are important in a way that they help in strengthening the bond of people in a group who have different temperaments. This is highly useful among employees who need to work as a team in a company. The best way to get them to act in unity towards achieving company goals is to encourage them to build rapport with people that they work with everyday. This can be attained while the participants are having real fun, thus they enjoy while developing camaraderie all the same.

Eduardo Salas, in his Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics Methods has explained four approaches to team building. First of which is the goal setting. This approach of goal setting puts the accent on the significance of setting clear objectives and developing individual and team goals. The members of the team actively take part with the action planning, in which they act in concert to identify ways to achieve goals and define success and failure. This aspect of the team building activities is intended to build up the motivation among the members of the team, as well as raise a sense of ownership, and help achieve clear, specific and definite goals and objectives. This can be done by classifying specific results. They may perhaps conduct tests of step-by-step success that teams can use to determine what prospect actions can address these areas for better upshots. An intervention program can also be done to alter the personal motivation of each individual member.

The next approach discussed in the handbook is the clarification of roles. It is important to emphasize the vitality of communication between members of the team with regards to their respective roles. Also, in the process it can improve their understanding of their own roles as well as the roles and duties of other members of the team, which is defined as a set of intersecting roles characterized by behaviors of each individual team member. This approach is anchored in the improvement of team effectiveness by reducing vagueness as regards their roles, and raise understanding of the significance of structure by means of activities aimed at negotiating, defining, and adjusting roles of team member. It can also help in setting in understanding among the members of the fact that talent exists in the team while enlightening them how to make best use of those talents. It will therefor allow members to appreciate the importance of clarity of purpose and the role of individuals in achieving set goals and embed realization that the team is comprised of interdependent individuals. Most importantly, it will help them realize that the failure of one team member may lead to the failure of the entire team.

The third approach discussed in the handbook is the style of problem solving. This approach emphasizes the importance of identifying major task-related problems within the team. This includes the act of involving team members in action planning, implementing solutions to problems identified, and evaluating those solutions involves setting goals, developing interpersonal relations, clarifying team roles and working to improve organizational characteristics. In turn, members can develop and enhance critical-thinking and problem solving skills which could make team members be less likely to need external interventions to solve their problems within the team.

The fourth approach is the interpersonal-relations management which emphasizes the importance of increasing essential skills needed in a teamwork which includes the skills of giving and receiving mutual support, communication and sharing, all of which develops trust between team members and confidence in the team. This approach will require the help of a facilitator to develop mutual trust and open communication between team members. Achieving higher level of trust among team members can develop cooperation among them, and when this sense of unity is embedded on them, the members of the team can be encouraged to accomplish tasks outside their familiarized roles which consequently would alter the characteristics of the team as a whole, leading to individual growth as well.
