Challenges to team building
Team building is especially sought for by organizations which are looking for quick ways to address the issues within the company client which affect their productivity. Most of these issues usually result from poor communication system in an organization, as well as from a vague leadership instructions thus resulting to an unproductive team with no clear vision of how to achieve the goals of the company.
In the book of W. G. Dyer on Team Building: Proven Strategies for Improving Team Performance, he recognized three challenges that team builders will face in the future, pertaining to effective team building.
First is the lack of teamwork skills in the workforce, which results from the act of organizations to rely on educational institutions to have trained graduate students with their preferred skills. However, Dyer believed that such candidates are encouraged and actually trained to work individually for a higher grade and succeed without having to collaborate with one another. Thus, it results to having a team comprised of members who cannot work effectively in a team environment. This puts emphasis in self-interest instead of an orientation to collaborate with others. Developing skills needed to effectively work in a team environment is important in providing a cognitive, affective, process and performance results.
Next is the need for teams to work together in virtual workplaces and across organizational boundaries. Nowadays, most companies function over the internet which calls for individuals to develop skills that would help them to work together even though they are not in the same physical space. This kind of team which is called as virtual team has more challenges to surpass compared to those teams in an organizations who get to work together in person. This is because they will be unable to build concrete relationships with other team members compared to those who work together face-to-face. It has been proven in a study conducted by Oertig and Buergi which compared the two opposite working approach, that face-to-face communication is highly important in building an effective working environment for the team. It was concluded that face-to-face contact was a key in the development of trust. Challenges employed in team building activities designed for virtual teams need to be adjusted to the needs their needs as dictated by their geographically differences.
Last on the list is the globalization and virtualization. As years go by, corporations will be comprised of teams composed of a large number of members who have different languages, cultures, values and approaches to solving the problems. This challenge is the same as what is experienced by virtual teams which do not get to work face-to-face. One way used to address this challenge is by increasing the level of one to one meetings. Facilitating the understanding and communication across team members can help in addressing this issue.
